What Are Sample Packs And Should You Use Them?

Introduction

Sampling has been a stable in Hip Hop production since it's beginning. A sample is an already finished melody loop. The term "Sample" originally refers to a chopped up version of an already existing song. Over time the word sample changed and now also includes original melody loops. Samples make it easy and convenient for producers short on time to create an idea for artists.

Understanding Sample Packs

The two most common sample packs are melody loops or One-Shot-Kits. Many also combine melody loops and one-shots. Sample packs contain a variety of sounds which makes it easier for other producers to find something they like or that inspires them. Most sample packs usually follow a certain genre, or theme. E.g. some producers specialize on dark trap melodies while others might be more into boom bap or soul style samples.

Customization And Personalization

In addition to saving time sample packs also let a lot of room for customization. You can just flip the samples however you want. Because they are already perfectly looping this is a lot easier then doing it with 80s Soul Samples for example. Most sample kits also include stems, so you can mix and match the arrangement however you please.

Conclusion

Samples can be an easy and time saving way of getting inspiration or refining an idea. Due to the ability to flip the samples and re arranging the stems there is almost no limit to personalization. If you constantly feel under time constraint or struggling with inspiration sample kits might be the solution you are looking for.
